The auricle undertakes the task of collecting sounds for transmission to the middle ear and inner ear. It has no direct effect on hearing. It completes 98 per cent of its development at the age of 5. However, there may be growth in later ages due to the loss of flexibility of the cartilage structure and skin.

When viewed from the opposite side of the face, the auricle is prominently protruding outwards or being large is called prominent ear deformity. To correct this problem, prominent ear surgery called otoplasty is performed.
